QwertyDesign: the portfolio of Edwin Toh
I'm a Staff UX Engineer at Google Cloud in New York, working on Gemini Enterprise. Before that, as a Design Engineer at Runway, I bridged Design, Engineering and Research, where my background and experience in each area provided unique insights and supercharged product iterations and features.
Back in 2007, fresh out of school, I named my portfolio QwertyDesign and gave myself one rule: the whole site had to work with just the keyboard. Every key opens a project or a section:
- Q: Qwerty — Back in 2007, fresh out of school, I named my portfolio QwertyDesign and gave myself one rule: the whole site had to work with just the keyboard.
- W: Workflows — From 0 to 1, built the initial prototype, then led a team to productionize the feature with an MVP in 3 weeks; worked closely with the respective Frontend, Backend and UX Leads.
- E: Experience — From design school to generative media, in seven stages.
- R: Recognition
- T: Tone Transfer — Integrated ML features and built frontend; open-sourced DDSP in Magenta JS, bringing a Python model to an in-browser model that runs on mobile.
- Y: Years
- U: Users — I care most about the person on the other side of the screen.
- I: Installations — Before screens took over, I spent a lot of my time tinkering with Arduino, Raspberry Pis, Kinect, and Oculus to build installations, the kind of thing you walk up to and play with.
- O: Open Source — Most of my work happens inside companies, but some of it gets to live in the open.
- P: Papers & Press
- A: About — I'm a Staff UX Engineer at Google Cloud in New York, working on Gemini Enterprise.
- S: Singapore — I grew up in Singapore.
- D: Devil Yogurt — My first FWA win. Devil Yogurt & His Wicked Comrades was a Flash website for Devil Yogurt, a frozen yogurt brand dressed up as monsters and the underworld.
- F: Ode to Flash — Flash is the reason I do what I do.
- G: Google AI Studio — Built an internal platform for Googlers to share and save prompt designs; used daily by thousands and inspiration for MakerSuite.
- H: How to Pronounce — Prototyped and helped launch a Search OneBox teaching pronunciation in American and British accents.
- J: Jury
- K: Kinetic V5 — Version 5 of Kinetic Singapore's website, kinetic.com.sg.
